Volcanoes!

Today we began and ended our study of volcanoes. I had planned on this lasting all week, but the girls were so excited that we finished today. This was the first time that we have used lapbooks in our studies. The girls really enjoyed making all the projects and learned bunches. We learned how volcanoes were created, the three different types of volcanoes, the three stages of volcanoes, and much more. We finished our lesson with a classic baking soda and vinegar volcano. Overall a wonderful day! (We also had to finish our regular schoolwork, so our school day was very, very long. Amazingly, nobody complained.)

Another Lost Tooth!

Early Bird lost her fifth tooth (on the bottom right hand side). We were eating lunch at Salsaritas and she tapped me on the shoulder and handed me her tooth. Yuck! She was so proud of herself.

Middle of Week 16

I'm happy to report that Early Bird begins the first of her final 10 math lessons (in Saxon 2) today. Yippee!! She and Night Owl will be in the same math book for a few weeks as Saxon 3 has a few more lessons than Saxon 2.

Beginning of Week 15

Too often I have no energy left at the end of the week to update the blog. I thought it would be a nice change of pace to tell you our plans for the week on Monday.

We started off today with a quick trip to the local elementary school to pick up some books at the book fair. The girls enjoyed picking out books and visiting with Night Owl's first grade teacher. It was fun to get out of the house for a bit this morning and they are both looking forward to SSR with their new books this afternoon.

We arrived home in time to begin at our normal time (9:00). This week we changed the schedule a bit to allow time for a new literature study and some Evan-Moor Ancient Rome history pockets. We have reached the point in our history study where we are diving into the "meaty" part of Roman History. These pockets will help reinforce events we have already covered an offer a bit more depth in other areas. Today was an introduction to Rome. We discussed the three time periods and also constructed a timeline. The girls really enjoyed making a booklet, shaped like a volcano, all about Mt. Vesuvius. After the literature study and history pocket, all we have left to cover today is spelling, grammar, math and SSR. Then, we are off to PE for 2 hours.
